Both of the videos shown in class were very informative and helpful. Adams demonstrated that even though it's extremely helpful, it's not necessary to have a graphic design degree in the field. Professionals in the industry have more of a focus on portfolios and are now more accepting of online portfolios as well. However, one of the things that surprised me the most was how much of a tight community the field of graphic design is. Networking is clearly important just like any other field, but word spreads rapidly and one's reputation matters within the community. Poor choices and presentation while in the job industry can drastically affect chances for employment, especially in the design field.
Margo Chase
Chase was very established in the field with her own agency and years of experience to support her. What influenced me the most in her video was the demonstration of the shoe box she helped design. The manner in which the shoe box was designed extended to not only aesthetics, but also functionality. From the strap utilized to carry the box to the way in which the box opened similarly to a drawer; granting many storage uses. It was one of the best examples of how product and packaging design could both advertise and have a functionality beyond the point of purchase. It's these details that make a brand resonate more with a consumer and become more relevant.
